Victim, officer involved in deadly shooting outside Burger King identified

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have identified the man shot and killed by an officer Monday morning outside Burger King as 27-year-old Danquirs Napoleon Franklin. App users click here.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Burger King located at 2601 Beatties Ford Road. Officers were called for reports of an armed person inside the business. 

At least one CMPD officer engaged with the suspect in the parking lot. According to CMPD, oFranklin was the armed and officers repeatedly ordered him to drop his gun before he was shot. 

Franklin was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as Wende Kerl. Kerl was hired by CMPD on April 19, 1995. She has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate investigation to fetermine whether CMPD polices and procedures were followed.

No officers were injured in connection to this incident, CMPD said. 

"Our thoughts are with all involved," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police tweeted Monday morning.

CMPD released two different 911 calls related to the shooting. The recordings have been edited, as required by state statute, to alter each caller's voice and remove any personal information such as name, address, and telephone number.
