An overnight shooting following an argument that broke out in an elevator at a hotel nearby the Epicentre has left two people injured, police said.

The suspect has been identified as David Monts, 26. He has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail.

The shooting took place early Sunday morning, March 3 at the AC Hotel on East Trade Street.

Shortly after 1 a.m. three individuals were in an elevator and an argument took place, and one person was shot. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and the suspect was taken into custody.

This incident comes two years after Memphis-based rapper Young Dolph was performing on the weekend that the CIAA Basketball Tournament was in town. One hundred bullets were fired into and around his tour bus in what was an apparent targeted attack. He miraculously survived the incident but concerns were raised.

Charlotte has hosted the basketball tournament over the past 15 years.

Police reports on last night's occurrence revealed that the two involved in the shooting did not know each other. When the suspect pulled out a firearm, a struggle ensued and the suspect accidentally shot himself in the leg. He also shot one of the other two men. The suspect was not a guest at the hotel, according to authorities.
