Woman charged with homicide by child abuse in 3-year-old's death

A Lancaster woman has been charged with homicide by child abuse in connection to the untimely death of a 3-year-old girl.

Police said on Monday, Dec. 18 at 12:04 p.m. they were called to 418 Health Circle in reference to an unresponsive and unconscious 3-year-old.

Upon arrival, the child was found lying on her back in the living room unresponsive. The child was assessed, with no pulse or respiration located. The little girl was transported to Springs Medical Emergency Room. Fire personnel administered CPR while enroute.

Once at the hospital, emergency treatment continued, however all efforts to revive the girl met with negative results, police said. Cause of death was cerebral edema due to blunt force injury of the head with a contributory factor of retroperitoneal hemorrhage, according to the Coroner's Office.

Lancaster police arrested Kayla Marie Cook, 25, of Lancaster on Friday, Dec. 29. Cook remains at the County Detention Center without bond.

"This tragic incident has taken a heavy toll on the families involved. It has touched a lot of people, including the Community, First Responders, Officers and Investigators involved as well. We will continue to speak for the young victim in this case as it moves forward through the judicial process," Chief Scott Grant said.
