CHARLOTTE, NC (WJZY) - A 23-year-old woman will face charges after she struck a car and killed one person early Saturday morning in south Charlotte.
Around 2:12 a.m. Saturday, August 20, officers were called to the 11200 block of South Tryon Street near the intersection of Moss Road to investigate a two-vehicle collision with injuries.
Kelly Ann Conkin, driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling north on South Tryon Street towards Moss Road. She struck a raised concrete curb on the right side of South Tryon Street and then veered to the left crossing over two lanes and onto the grass median. The Hyundai then traveled through the median into the opposing lanes, crashing into a 2015 Toyota Camry with four people traveling south on South Tryon Street.
Conkin was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota Camry, 57-year-old Farshad Hosseini, and rear passenger, 79-year-old Cecelia Buitiago De Gonzalez, were both transported to CMC with serious injuries. Front seat passenger, Sonia Rocio Gonzalez, 50, and rear passenger, Shophia Hosseini, 11, were transported with minor injuries.
De Gonzalez later died at the hospital from injuries she sustained in the collision.
Conkin was charged at CMC with driving while impaired. She was listed in serious condition requiring hospitalization.
On Monday, August 29, Conkin was discharged from Carolinas Medical Center. She was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office where she was served with the arrest warrants for second-degree murder, felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle, reckless driving, and possession of marijuana.
