A 23-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital after she was shot inside a University area apartment Monday morning, police said.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Wexford Apartment homes, located at 1900 Wexford Meadows Lane just off University Boulevard.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police tell FOX 46 Charlotte that a woman was shot multiple times inside the apartment, including a shot to the chest. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in serious condition. A 6-month-old child was also in the apartment, but was not injured.

The gunman was looking for someone else who wasn't in the apartment at the time, according to police. A 34-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man also live in the apartment, according to an incident report. Neither of them were home at the time of shooting, investigators said.

A stray bullet also went though a wall into an adjacent apartment, police said.

"I say thank you my Lord because I had the appointment," Mary Chaves, who lives in the apartment next door, said.

Chaves was at the doctor at the time of the shooting next door, but when she came back to her apartment, she found a bullet hole in the wall of her dining room.

So far, no arrests have been made.
