Woody and Wilcox get results for Purple Heart Homes and Dollars for Dale

Good Day Charlotte hit the road and the radio on the Woody and Wilcox Show Tuesday morning, who are getting results for Purple Heart Homes and the founder’s family.

Dale Beatty was an army sergeant who lost both his legs after an explosion when he was deployed in Iraq. When he came back to Carolina, he found it hard to get around his own home. Thanks to help from his neighbors, the Statesville community rallied together to build a barrier-free home for Dale and his family.

Dale paid that compassion forward, a thousand times over. He co-founded Purple Heart Homes in 2008, an organization that renovates homes for deserving veterans injured in combat. For his service, bravery, and philanthropy, he was named a Top Ten CNN Hero in 2013 and highlighted on the cover of Time Magazine in August 2011. Fox46 Charlotte has partnered with Purple Heart Homes to carry on Dale’s dream.

“If you ever had a chance to meet Dale he lit up a room. He didn’t let the fact that he had a disability affect him at all,” Woody said. “He was out there helping others, that was his mission.”

This past February, Dale was suddenly taken from his family and died at the age of 39 years old. He leaves behind a wife, 3 kids, and a legacy that grows each day, with each veteran his mission supports.

“We realized his family needs some help and of course his mission Purple Heart Homes needs some help,” Chris Wilcox said. “One of the things we wanted to make sure they could do it [send the kids] to college.”

Good Day Charlotte’s Lauren Dugan spent Tuesday morning broadcasting on Fox46 Charlotte and on the Woody and Wilcox Show who are getting results for Purple Heart Homes and Dale’s family. They have started a fundraiser “Dollars for Dale” built on the idea that if everyone gave just $1 we can help this deserving family. Donations have been coming in from people around the country, some who closely knew Dale and others simply inspired by his service. This summer they will also be hosting Dale-gates. The first tailgate is on April 27: For $20 you can get a ticket to the Charlotte Hounds lacrosse game, two Noda Brewery craft beers, and a slice of pizza. Ten dollars from each package will go to Dollars for Dale.
