CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - They call him the Dean of the CIAA.
"That's age, I've lasted longer than some, and I've been around for a long time," said Johnson C. Smith head men's basketball coach Steve Joyner Sr.
A long time is right. He has coached at JCSU for close to 40 years winning three CIAA titles along the way. However, that's not the sole reason he's in the CIAA Hall of Fame.
"He's really more than a coach to me," said senior guard Christian Kirchman. "He's a father figure, he's taught me things that's not only gonna help on this court but in life."
One of his biggest success stories, coaches the women's team at JCSU. His son Stephen Joyner Jr.
"Without his guidance, without his father-like wisdom, I would not be the man I am today, so I am grateful and thankful for that," said Joyner Jr.
Joyner capture his first CIAA championship in 2017. Admittedly, he has work to do to catch up to his father, but both teams are in a good place. The women enter the CIAA tournament is the #2 seed while the men are the top seed.
Regardless if the "Dean" wins another title or not, he's already considered a living legend.
