Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly will not play Sunday against the Houston Texans after suffering a concussion last Sunday in the game against Jacksonsville, the Carolina Panthers announced on Twitter Saturday morning.

AJ Klein will start in place of Kuechly , who left last weekend's season opener early because of his injury.

"He was able to get into the locker room on his own," said Panthers head coach Ron Rivera. "He went through the protocol immediately and, like I said, I saw him today and he looked like Luke to me."

The Panthers did not say if Kuechly suffers a set back or if they're just being cautious.

Kuechly recently became the NFL's highest-paid middle linebacker when he signed a contract extension for $61.8 million.

Kuechly has an NFL-best 473 tackles since coming into the league as a first-round draft pick in 2012. He's one of only three players to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year award within his first two years, earning that honor in 2013.

Coverage of the Panthers' homeopener starts at 10:30a on Fox 46 WJZY with the Fox 46 Pregame show.
