CHARLOTTE, N.C. - What little hope remains of the Carolina Panthers making the playoffs appears to be slipping away.
Cam Newton will sit out Sunday's game with Atlanta and take care of his shoulder, the team announced Wednesday. Taylor Heinicke will be starting in Newton's place Sunday when the Panthers (6-8) take on the Falcons (5-9).
Rookie Kyle Allen is expected to be signed from the practice squad to serve as Heinicke's backup Sunday.
Newton is not out for the season. The Panthers' star quarterback is still active and available to be used in the playoffs.
During a Tuesday press conference, head coach Ron Rivera said no decision had been made on Newton's status. Newton's injury during Monday night's loss to the New Orleans Saints. He struggled throwing the ball more than 10 yards downfield and said after the game he’s unsure what the injury is, but he mentioned his labrum and rotator cuff as possible issues.
