The Carolina Panthers came out with a big win in their home opener, avoiding overtime and narrowly escaping the Houston Texans 24-17.

Cam Newton made plays with his arm and his legs, throwing for two touchdowns and running for one more.

The defense made plays throughout the game and made key stops when it mattered the most, stopping the Texans on fourth down in the fourth quarter to avoid overtime.

The Panthers are tied atop the division with the Atlanta Falcons at 2-0, after they beat the New York Giants in the Meadowlands 24-20.

Next week the Panthers take on the Saints at Bank of America stadium for their first divisional game of the season.

The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and can be seen on Fox 46 WJZY.
