Black ice major threat Wednesday night into Thursday

The major threat for Charlotte roadways is the one you can't see: black ice.

Officials warn not to leave your home if you don't have to. FOX 46 Charlotte caught up with one worker trying to keep you safe if you absolutely have to be out on the roads.

Willie Funderburk is one of the dozens of drivers responsible for salting and plowing the streets in the Charlotte area. He says even his truck has slide on black ice. He wants drivers to steer clear of him.

"If they can get out of my way, it'd be even better. They don't seem to understand that they're slinging salt, spreading stuff on the road," Funderburk said. "I've seen a lot of people in the ditches."

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to more than 200 wrecks from midnight to 9 p.m. Wednesday. That's more than double their daily average.

The City of Charlotte Department of Transportation will continue treating streets through the night.
