Snow possible in Charlotte area this weekend

The FOX 46 Neighborhood Storm Watch Team is tracking the possibility for winter weather for this weekend.

Will we see snow in Charlotte? There’s no guarantee we will, but some models are showing the chance for snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain Saturday and Sunday.

Here’s what we know so far: A low pressure system is expected to form along the Gulf Coast of Texas on Wednesday or Thursday. The low will bring moisture into our area Saturday and Sunday. Colder air will be in the area thanks to a high pressure off to the north.

It’s still too early to tell how cold temperatures will be this weekend and how much moisture will move in with the low pressure system. Once the low pressure forms by mid-week, we’ll have a better handle on what type of precipitation you might see in your neighborhood.

The track of the low will determine what type of precipitation we'll see and the amount of precipitation we'll see. If the low takes a southerly track, more cold air from the north can funnel in and create a snow set-up. If the low moves to the west or right over the area, cold rain could be the result. If the low ends up right in the middle, a wintry mix could be the result.
