The Piedmont could get a dusting of snow Wednesday afternoon. It'll be a preview of a bigger winter storm that is expected to hit the area Friday.
Watauga, Avery and Ashe County schools will be closed Thursday due to snow. It will be an optional workday for faculty and staff.
Caldwell County schools will have a 3-hour delay Thursday.
Wednesday, the Charlotte area will see snow flurries, but the snow isn't expected to stick to the ground. The mountains could get up to 1-2" of snow. A few peaks in the mountains could get around 4" of snow.
Thursday will be dry, but Friday will be the biggest winter weather event. Forecast models show a strong potential for ice in the Charlotte-metro area. The precipitation could fall as sleet or freezing rain, and eventually turn to snow as the day goes on, possibly accumulating 2-4 inches. Some spots in the mountains could see as much as 18" of snow through Friday.
